ODEON OF HERODES ATTICUS – 1 SEPTEMBER 2018
Directed by Kostas Tsianos
The then-19-year-old Aristophanes presented his comedy The Acharnians at the Lenaia Festival on 425 B.C., the sixth year of the Peloponnesian War, winning first prize. The play is set in Acharnaia (modern-day Menidi), the rural area of Attica and boasts a Dionysian aspect, as many fertility rituals dedicated to Dionysus were performed in rural areas at the time.
The Acharnians ridicules war and warmongers, conveying people’s longing for a peaceful life.
A brilliant comedy, much like a frenzied Dionysian feast, with its lively chorus of charcoal burners, drawing on popular traditions.
